Arlen Smith, DC
Austin, Texas
I was originally introduced to the Sidmar massage tables in 1992. At that time, I was working in a multi-doctor facility in Oregon. We were attending a seminar and one of the vendors had a table on display. Being the inquisitive person I am, as well as having a love for innovative ideas, I plopped my substantial body on top of the table. I was pleasantly surprised by the aggressiveness that the table was able to achieve in massaging the body, and felt it was probably the closest thing to an actual massage that was available. |
| I convinced the other doctors to purchase the display model right off the floor. We loaded it a van and the next morning it was running in our clinic. It was profitable from the very beginning. As far as I know, the clinic is still using that same table. |
| In 1997, I moved to Austin, Texas and purchased another clinic. My very first equipment purchase was a Sidmar massage table. I had a goal of doubling the practice within the first 6 months, and the table is an integral part of that plan. Within four months the table was working at capacity and I had to have another. Within a year, I had to purchase a third. |
| The tables function as an adjunct to the treatment the patients receive. Generally, the patient is placed on the table after they are treated to let them relax and allow the adjustment to settle in. It is not uncommon to hear snoring coming from the massage area after only about 2 minutes on the table. Frequently, the patients will ask for extra time. I believe this is a great compliment for the tables as the patients rarely ask to have extra of any other modality. I have no trouble getting reimbursed for the therapy, and to date it has never been questioned by any third party payor. |
| When I was first in practice, I employed various massage therapists as I have always believed massage to be an effective therapy to be used in conjunction with Chiropractic. But, there were always the problems, as there is with any employee, involving the occasional sick leave, or vacation, or personal problems that prevent them from coming in....well, you know what I mean. Since purchasing the tables, my need for a massage therapist is now non-existent. The tables never get sick, they are always on time, and they never get tired. They don’t complain, they work hard and they generally pay for themselves after about one month. No other therapist I have used can say that. The building I am in even has three other massage therapists, and they come to my office to lay on the tables when they are tired! |
| Besides being a great revenue source for the office, they also promote themselves. It is a very regular occurrence to have a new patient comes in, and after they are evaluated and treated, say, “I heard you have these great water tables...can I try it?” It seems that sometimes they are more interested in the massage than being treated by me, but I’ll take what ever it takes to get them in the office. |
| As of last month, I bought a second clinic in downtown Austin. Sticking with my original modus operandi, the first piece of equipment I bought was a Sidmar table. The trend is repeating itself already and I expect the practice to double within the next three months. I don’t believe I could achieve this fast of a growth curve without the tables |
